Methamphetamine (N-methyl-alpha-methylphenethylamine) is a synthetically produced substance from the phenylethylamine group. It is used both in medicine as a drug and abusively as a euphoric and stimulating intoxicant. Other names include metamfetamine or N-methylamphetamine; historically, colloquially, and in the drug scene, numerous names are in common use, including Panzerschokolade, crystal meth, or ice.
Methamphetamine belongs to the amphetamine class of substances. It includes several other psychoactive substances, including amphetamine itself and the naturally occurring ephedrine. Methamphetamine is a potent stimulant and indirect sympathomimetic, i.e., it strongly stimulates the sympathetic parts of the autonomic nervous system.

Production, possession or marketing of methamphetamine without a permit is punishable in Germany and most European countries. In the USA, the substance has been covered by the Drug Control Act since 1970.
Methamphetamine was first synthesized in liquid form in 1893 by the Japanese chemist Nagayoshi Nagai. In 1919, in the course of the structural elucidation of ephedrine, the substance was crystallized in pure form for the first time by Akira Ogata, patented in 1921 and marketed by the pharmaceutical company Dainippon Seiyaku under the brand name Philopon (Japanese γγγγ³, Hiropon). The name probably derives from the Japanese words ‘fatigue’ (hirΕ) and ‘with a blow’ (pon) in the sense of ‘fatigue disappears in one blow’ or else from the Greek philoponus (‘work-loving’).
In Germany, starting in 1934, research was conducted at the Temmler-Werke in Berlin on another process for producing methamphetamine, which was patented in October 1937. Subsequently, methamphetamine was marketed in 1938 under the brand name Pervitin by Temmler-Werke, which still held the trademark rights until 2015.Pralines spiked with Pervitin (so-called “housewives’ chocolate”) were also available.
Especially during the successful blitzkriegs against Poland (1939) and against France in 1940, methamphetamine was used by the millions. General Heinz Guderian ordered 20,000 tablets of Pervitin for the I Panzer Division for the first days of the Western campaign, especially for the breakthrough at Sedan.
Nicknamed Panzerschokolade, Stuka-Tabletten, Hermann-GΓΆring-Pillen, and Fliegermarzipan (but not Fliegerschokolade), the drug, which was thus mostly administered orally, served to dampen the feeling of anxiety, increase the ability to perform and concentrate, and boost the self-esteem of soldiers, vehicle drivers, and pilots. The same applied to the Russian campaign, the Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of the Bulge: here, too, many soldiers of the German Wehrmacht were given Pervitin to increase their stamina and dampen the feeling of cold, hunger and exhaustion.
